Private vs Sharing Snorkeling Nusa Penida: Which Boat Should You Book?

Sharing or private snorkeling in Nusa Penida? Here are our real prices, what’s included, and who should pay extra. Short answer: sharing for couples, private for families and groups of 4+.
Most blogs say, "sharing is cheaper, private is more flexible." True, but it doesn't help you decide. As a local operator running snorkeling trips here every day, here are our real prices, what you actually get, and who should pay extra.
Short answer: sharing is the smart choice for couples and solo travelers. Private is worth it for families, groups of 4+, small kids, and anyone chasing mantas without a crowd.
What's included in both
Whether you pick sharing or private, you get:
- Snorkeling boat
- Snorkeling gear (mask, snorkel, fins)
- Guide
- Shower and towel after
- Underwater photos and video (GoPro)
The only real difference is who is on your boat and who sets the schedule.

Let's be honest: private never becomes cheaper than sharing. Even at 8 people, you pay more. But the gap shrinks fast. For a group of 6 on the West trip, private costs only about IDR 100,000 more per person. That's the price of a lunch for a very different day.
Choose sharing if...
- You're a couple or traveling solo (private costs 3-4x more for 2 people)
- Budget matters and you're happy with a set schedule
- You're confident in the water and don't mind a group
- You want to meet other travelers
Choose private if...
- You're a family or group of 4-6. The per-person premium is small and the day is much easier
- You have young kids or nervous swimmers. The guide and boat focus on your group, at your pace
- You want mantas. Waiting for a sighting, moving spots when the current is wrong, and staying longer are all possible on a private boat
- You have a tight schedule. You decide the start time and how long to stay at each spot
- You want calmer water. Fewer people in the water means better visibility and less chaos around the guide
What a sharing trip really feels like
Sharing means a fixed departure time and a boat with other guests. The guide has to look after everyone, so the pace is set by the slowest swimmer and the schedule. On busy days (July-August), you'll see other boats at the popular spots. It's still a great trip, and for 150k it's excellent value. Just go in expecting a group experience.
What a private trip really feels like
It's your group, your boat, your guide. If the first spot is crowded or the current is strong, we move. If everyone is having a good time, you stay. Photos and GoPro footage are all about your group. It costs more, and you're paying for that control.
Manta Point vs Manta Bay: which trip?
Prices differ because the experience differs. Manta Point is a cleaning station with a very high sighting rate, and it sits further away, so it costs more. Manta Bay is closer, with a lower chance but a calmer feel. Read the full comparison: Manta Point vs Manta Bay.
