Crystal Bay Nusa Penida

Most beaches in Nusa Penida demand something from you. Kelingking asks you to stand at a cliff edge. Diamond Beach makes you descend hundreds of stairs. Angel's Billabong requires you to time the tides.
Crystal Bay is different. Crystal Bay just lets you arrive, drop your bag, and exhale.
A sheltered cove on the western coast of the island, Crystal Bay is the most accessible and genuinely relaxing beach on Nusa Penida. The water is calm, the sand is wide, and the snorkeling starts just 30 metres from the shore. If you want to do nothing but float, you can. If you want to dive with one of the rarest fish on the planet, you can do that too.
And if you time it right, you can watch the sun sink behind Bali while sitting on the sand with a cold drink in your hand.
This is Crystal Bay. It earns its name every single time.
What Makes Crystal Bay Special?
Crystal Bay is a 200-metre white and black sand beach flanked by green hills, facing west toward Bali. A small island — locally called Turtle Island — sits just offshore in the middle of the bay. The name comes from the water itself: visibility underwater is often so clear that you can see coral and fish from the surface before you even put your mask on.
What sets Crystal Bay apart from other Nusa Penida beaches:
- Calm, swimmable water most of the year — protected by the bay's natural shape
- World-class snorkeling accessible directly from the beach, no boat needed
- Mola Mola diving — Crystal Bay is globally renowned as one of the best places on earth to dive with the giant ocean sunfish
- The best sunset spot on Nusa Penida — the bay faces due west, directly toward Bali
- Easy access — only 15–25 minutes from the harbour, on a fully paved road
It is also the perfect final stop on a West Nusa Penida day trip. After the drama of Kelingking, Broken Beach, and Angel's Billabong, Crystal Bay is where you decompress.
Location
Crystal Bay is located on the western coast of Nusa Penida, approximately 8 km southwest of Toyapakeh Harbour.
Address: Desa Sakti, Nusa Penida, Klungkung Regency, Bali GPS coordinates: -8.7227° S, 115.4441° E
The road from Toyapakeh is fully paved and straightforward — one of the easiest drives on the island.
How to Get to Crystal Bay from Bali
Step 1 — Bali to Nusa Penida
Take a fast boat from Sanur harbour to Nusa Penida. Boats depart from approximately 07:00 to 16:30, with the crossing taking 30 to 45 minutes. Tickets typically cost IDR 100,000 – 250,000 per person one way. Book in advance during peak season (June to September).
You will arrive at Toyapakeh or Banjar Nyuh harbour on the northwestern side of Nusa Penida.
Step 2 — From the Harbour to Crystal Bay
Crystal Bay is one of the closest major attractions to the harbour — about 15 to 25 minutes by car or scooter on a fully paved road.
Private Driver (Car)
- Cost: IDR 500,000 – 700,000 per day
- Ideal if you are combining Crystal Bay with the rest of the West Nusa Penida circuit in a single day. A private driver handles everything and lets you set your own pace.
Scooter Rental
- Cost: IDR 80,000 – 150,000 per day
- Crystal Bay is one of the more accessible rides on Nusa Penida — the road is paved and the route is straightforward. Still, take care on any unfamiliar roads.
Local tip: Crystal Bay works perfectly as the final stop on a West Nusa Penida day — arrive in the late afternoon after Kelingking, Broken Beach, and Angel's Billabong, catch the snorkeling, then stay for sunset. You will be back at the harbour in time for the last fast boat to Bali. Check our West Nusa Penida Day Tour for a well-paced itinerary that includes Crystal Bay at the right time.

Best Time to Visit Crystal Bay
Best Season
The dry season (April to October) is the best time overall. Calm weather, clearer water, and better visibility for snorkeling and diving.
For Mola Mola diving specifically, the prime window is July to October — when cooler deep water rises closer to the surface and the sunfish ascend to shallower depths where divers can reach them. August and September are peak months.
The wet season (November to March) is still pleasant for swimming and relaxing, but water visibility can be reduced and occasional swells make snorkeling less ideal.
Best Time of Day
- Morning (07:00 – 10:00): Best for snorkeling — calm water, excellent visibility, fewer people in the bay.
- Midday (10:00 – 14:00): Busiest period, as day-trip tours arrive. The beach gets crowded between 11:00 and 15:00.
- Late afternoon (15:00 – 18:00): Crowds thin out as day-trippers leave. The light turns golden, the atmosphere becomes relaxed, and sunset begins around 17:30 – 18:00 depending on the time of year. This is the best window for sunset photos and a quiet end to the day.
Recommendation: If you are doing the full West Nusa Penida circuit, save Crystal Bay for the afternoon — arrive around 14:30 to 15:00, snorkel while it is quieter, then stay for sunset.
Things to Do at Crystal Bay
Swim and Relax on the Beach
Crystal Bay is one of the very few beaches on Nusa Penida where swimming is genuinely comfortable and safe. The bay is naturally sheltered, the water is calm most of the year, and the beach is wide enough to find your own space. Bring a sarong, find a spot under the palms, and spend an hour doing absolutely nothing. After a morning of clifftop viewpoints and steep descents, this is exactly what you need.
Note: While Crystal Bay is calm compared to other Nusa Penida beaches, ocean currents can still be stronger than they appear from shore. Stay within the protected area of the bay and do not swim out beyond the bay's natural boundaries.
Snorkel the Coral Reef
The reef at Crystal Bay starts just 30 metres from the shore — one of the most accessible snorkeling spots anywhere on the island. Swim out and you will find yourself directly above a vibrant coral garden full of tropical fish, sea turtles, and sea cucumbers. Water clarity at Crystal Bay is exceptional; visibility can exceed 30 metres on a good day.
You do not need to book anything in advance. Simply rent gear from a vendor on the beach and wade in. The reef is easy to find — follow any other snorkeler heading out from the shore.
Dive with the Mola Mola (July to October)
This is what puts Crystal Bay on the global diving map.
The Mola Mola — also known as the ocean sunfish — is one of the most bizarre and magnificent creatures in the sea. It is the world's heaviest bony fish, reaching up to 3 metres in diameter and weighing over a tonne. For most of the year it lives in the deep ocean, far below where divers can reach it. But between July and October, cooler water rises to the surface around Nusa Penida, and the Mola Mola rises with it — ascending to depths of 25 to 30 metres, within reach of recreational scuba divers.
Crystal Bay is the single best place in the world to dive with the Mola Mola. Several dive operators are based directly at the bay. A small traditional boat (jukung) takes you out to the dive site just beyond the bay entrance, where the wall drops into deep water.
A few things to know before booking a Mola Mola dive:
- Minimum certification: Open Water
- Recommended experience: Some prior cold-water or drift diving is helpful — the site can have current
- Depth: 25–30 metres, so Advanced Open Water or a deep dive certification is preferred
- Sightings are not guaranteed — the Mola Mola is a wild animal. August and September have the highest probability of an encounter.
Even outside Mola Mola season, Crystal Bay is a picturesque dive site all year round, with healthy coral walls, reef fish, and regular turtle sightings.
Watch the Sunset
Crystal Bay faces due west, directly toward Bali. On a clear afternoon, you watch the sun descend toward the silhouette of Bali's volcanoes and disappear into the Bali Strait in a full display of orange, pink, and gold.
This is the best sunset spot on Nusa Penida — and one of the best sunsets you will find anywhere in Bali.
Sunset typically begins around 17:30, varying slightly by season. Arrive at least 30 minutes before to find a good spot on the beach, grab a cold drink from one of the warungs, and just watch. Some moments in travel do not need activity around them. Sunset at Crystal Bay is one of them.
Photography Tips for Crystal Bay
- Sunset shots: Position yourself on the beach with Turtle Island in the middle of your frame. The small island silhouettes beautifully against the orange sky and creates natural depth in the composition.
- Snorkeling underwater: Bring a waterproof camera or GoPro — the coral and fish density at Crystal Bay makes underwater shots easy even for beginners. A red filter improves colour at depth.
- Drone: Crystal Bay's shape, the small island, and the surrounding green hills make this a fantastic drone location. Check local regulations before flying.
- Wide angle for the beach: At low tide, the beach extends further and the reflections on the wet sand are excellent. Shoot wide to capture the full horseshoe shape of the bay.
- Timing: Afternoon light hits the beach and the water at a low angle, making colours more vivid. Avoid shooting into the sun before 15:00 — wait until it drops lower in the sky.
West Nusa Penida Itinerary — Crystal Bay as the Final Stop
Crystal Bay works best as the relaxed finale of a West Nusa Penida day. Here is how to build the full day:
07:00 — Kelingking Beach viewpoint. Early morning light, minimal crowds, the full T-Rex panorama at its best. 09:00 — Drive to Broken Beach (~20 minutes). Walk the clifftop rim, photograph the natural arch. 09:45 — Walk to Angel's Billabong (5 minutes from Broken Beach). Check tidal conditions — aim for low tide. 11:00 — Lunch at a warung near the Broken Beach / Angel's Billabong parking area. 12:00 — Drive to Crystal Bay (~25 minutes). 12:30 – 14:30 — Snorkeling while the water is still clear and before the afternoon current builds. 14:30 – 17:00 — Relax on the beach. Sun lounger, cold drink, no agenda. 17:00 – 18:00 — Watch the sunset. Bali silhouetted against the sky. The perfect end. 18:15 — Drive back to Toyapakeh harbour for the evening fast boat to Bali.
