Yes, you can do Nusa Penida as a day trip from anywhere in South Bali. Thousands of travelers do it every month from Canggu, Ubud, Seminyak and beyond. But the question most guides skip is the practical one: what time does your day actually start, and what does it cost to get you to the boat?

Every guest, whatever hotel they stay in, has to reach Sanur harbour to catch the fast boat. That drive is the part of the day that changes from area to area. So this guide covers exactly that: the real pickup times we use, what the pickup fee is, how it works out per person, which car you will travel in, and why we push guests toward the first boat.

Pickup time and fee by area

The most important thing to notice: the fee is per car, not per person. That changes the maths depending on how many of you are travelling.

What the pickup fee costs per person

If you are travelling alone from Canggu, the pickup is a real chunk of your budget. In that case, it is worth thinking about meeting us at Sanur instead. If you are a family or a group of four, the fee is small once it is split.

Why we pick you up this early

The early start is not there to make your morning harder. It is so you catch the first boat, and that matters more than most people expect.

You avoid the Sanur traffic delay. Sanur gets busy in the morning. If you are already at the harbour before the traffic builds, nothing eats into your day. A late arrival can mean a later boat, and a later boat pushes everything back.

You get more time on the island. From what we see in our own bookings, most guests board between 07:00 and 08:30. The earlier you are in that window, the more hours you have at the viewpoints, and the softer the morning light is when you arrive.

The tour feels relaxed, not rushed. This is the biggest one. With the first boat, there is no need to race from stop to stop to fit everything in. That matters most on a mix tour (west and east in one day), where every minute counts. Miss the early boat, and you spend the whole day watching the clock.

We have seen it many times: two guests book the same tour, one takes the first boat and enjoys the day, the other takes a later boat and spends the afternoon hurrying.

Area by area: what to expect

Canggu and Ubud (pickup 06:00, IDR 550,000)
These are the longest drives to Sanur, so the pickup is the earliest, and the fee is the highest. The morning is the easy part. The return is where you feel the distance: the drive back from Sanur usually lands in the evening rush hour, so you will likely reach your hotel later than guests staying in other areas. It is very doable, and many guests do exactly this. Just plan for it: sleep well the night before, and don't book a tight dinner reservation for that evening.

Uluwatu (pickup 06:00, IDR 550,000)
Same early pickup and the same fee as Canggu and Ubud, because it is one of the longest drives to Sanur.

Nusa Dua (pickup 06:00, IDR 450,000)
The same early pickup, but a shorter drive, so the fee is lower than for Canggu, Ubud, and Uluwatu.

Kuta, Seminyak and the airport (pickup 06:15 to 06:30, IDR 400,000)
A little later, because the drive is shorter. This is one of the most common setups we handle. If you are landing in Bali and want to do Nusa Penida early in your trip, the airport pickup works well too.

Sanur hotels (pickup 06:30 to 07:00, IDR 350,000)

Meet us at Sanur (07:15 to 07:30, no pickup fee)
If you can get yourself to Sanur harbour by then, you pay no pickup fee at all. The catch is simple: being at the harbour on time is what keeps the whole day smooth. If you are staying nearby, this is the cheapest way to do it.

Which car, and how many people fit?

We use two car types for pickups:

• Avanza: ideal for up to 5 guests
• APV: ideal for up to 6 guests

The pickup fee is per car, so the fee in the table above covers the whole car, not each guest.

Staying overnight on Nusa Penida with luggage?
This changes the numbers. Suitcases take up the back of the car, so the space for passengers shrinks. With luggage, the car may realistically fit only about 4 guests. If you are travelling as a group and staying on the island, tell us how many bags you are bringing when you book, so we can send the right car.

What the day looks like

Your exact times depend on the boat and your tour, but the shape of the day is always the same:

1. Early morning: your driver picks you up (or you meet us at Sanur).
2. Sanur harbour: you check in and board the fast boat. Boarding is from the beach, so you will walk through shallow water. Wear sandals or shoes you don't mind getting wet, and bring a change of clothes.
3. The crossing: about 40 minutes to Nusa Penida.
4. The tour: west side, east side, or a mix, with your private driver.
5. Return boat: you head back in the afternoon.
6. Drop-off: your driver takes you back to your hotel.

When do you get back?

Your return time from Nusa Penida is flexible. It depends on when your tour finishes. If you don't enjoy taking photos at every viewpoint and you don't like the heat, most tours end earlier than people expect. If you want to linger at a beach or take your time at the lookouts, we go at your pace.

What decides your arrival time at the hotel is the traffic after the boat. The drive from Sanur back to Canggu or Ubud often falls in the evening rush, so guests staying there usually get back later than guests staying in Sanur, Kuta, or Seminyak. If you want the earliest possible finish, a shorter tour and an earlier boat back will help. It won't remove the traffic, but it can keep you ahead of the worst of it.

Which tour should you pick?

The pickup is only half the decision. The other half is which side of the island to see.

• The west tour covers the famous cliff viewpoints and beaches.
